Book and audiobook reviews

  • Deep Deception book cover

    Deep Deception

A previous review, Sister in Law, mentions the Spycops events and some of the women involved, through the lense of the law.

Deep Deception takes a closer look, seeing events through the eyes of the victims of undercover policing which overstepped the mark, and saw officers grooming women into relationships, even into forming families with them.

  • Sister in Law, book cover

Sister in Law, Fighting for Justice in a System Designed by Men

Harriet Wistrich of the Centre for Women’s Justice has written about the interface between the justice system and the women she’s represented.

High profile cases she didcusses include ‘Spycops’, Sally Challen n, Emma Humphries…

  • Book cover: Keanu Reeves is Not in Love with You

Keanu Reeves is Not in Love with You

Maybe you don’t need telling that Keanu’s not in love with you, but behind the hilarity of scamming the scammers who pretend to be Keanu Reeves and other celebrities lies a darker truth - the damage is more than financial loss.

Serious message, but delivered in great style, this book is probably the first book on adult grooming that’s had us laughing out loud!

  • Book cover: Groomed, Nicola Tallant

Groomed: Coercion, Control and a Cold-blooded Murder

Cult like groomer, Jonathon Creswell (Jonny) was a cherub faced jockey into whose orbit many women fell. All bar one of his ‘harem’ would protect him to the very end, despite him clearly having murdered Katie Simpson. This is a terrible insight into coercive control, domestic abuse, cult like tactics and people - including the police - who turned a blind eye and failed to prevent the almost inevitable ending.

  • Book Cover, Nobody Girl

Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice

Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice by Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

This is the book a feisty campaigner for truth and justice gave her life up to bring you.

So it’s a must read, especially if you want an insight into how Epstein and Maxwell’s women and girls alike were sucked in, whilst the World looked on, hidden in plain sight.

  • Book cover: Silenced no More

    Silenced no More

A CAAGe review of Silenced No More, Surviving my Journey to Hell and Back, by Epstein/Maxwell victim/survivor Sarah Ransome. (Released Dec 2021)

  • Chasing Ghislaine publicity poster

    Chasing Ghislaine, Audible

The journalist who started the search for Epstein’s source of wealth took on a simple task - an interview.

It lead to something much darker, and always there, lurking in the shadows, Ghislaine Maxwell.

The victims’ story, the horrors of Epstein and the confusing character of Maxell unfurl in this compelling factual account behind the Epstein grooming pyramid.

  • Please Let me Go book cover

    Please Let Me Go

‘Please Let Me Go’ Caitlin is promised a modelling job, but ends up in a horrendous situation. This is a true story, the story of a young woman who was groomed and abused, repeatedly raped and trafficked in Britain in the 21st Century.

  • What Lies Behind the Curtain book cover

    What Lies Behind the Curtain

When Claire became a teenage model, the agency owners groomed her for sex, cleverly waiting until she was an 'adult' to have penetrative (male) sex with her. She tells the story in her useful book, which we've reviewed here.

  • Book cover titled 'Eve Was Shamed' by Helena Kennedy, with a subtitle 'How British Justice is Failing Women'. The cover features distressed white background with black and pink text, and a small illustration of a hanging helicopter.

    Eve was Shamed

This book is a ’must read’ for anyone who has bumped up against the British legal system.

The first chapter had me feeling I-d picked up the wrong book, that this was about women in legal professions. It was merely a preface - the book delves far, far deeper.

  • The psychopath test book cover

    The Psychopath Test

It takes a lot to make an understanding of psychopathy both easy and entertaining. Not every groomer is a psychopath, and not every psychopath is a groomer, but sometimes it pays to have an understanding of both

  • Restored book cover

    Restored

This is a fabulous little book: a handbook for Christian survivors of domestic abuse.

Grounded in Christianity and scriptures, for anyone facing a Christian dilemma stay/go, forgive or not, this is a fabulous resource.

  • Class Action book cover

    Class Action

This book is an outlier in terms of our reviews - most specifically address the topics of adult grooming or persona stories. This true account of women’s fight in a male work environment was read with a view to the experience of mounting a ‘Class Action’.

The UK doesn’t have a direct equivalent to the US system, but the insight into the complexities and traumatising nature of seeking justice make it well worthy of inclusion.

  • Man in crowd holding banner saying "Consent Matters"

Reforming the Relationship between Sexual Consent, Deception and Mistake

This is a summary of a paper suggesting one way of addressing legal reform that has been desperatly needed since ‘Rape by Deception’ laws were rendered useless in the UK by a judgement in one of the many Skycops cases.

Naturally the focus for us in this review is on the two jkey issues defining grooming - intent and consent - and we can’t help wondering if there’s an easier way!!

  • Disobedient Women, book cover

    Disobedient Women

Book Review by Cait West (13 AUG 2023) of Sarah Stankorb's new book Disobedient Women: How a Small Group of Faithful Women Exposed Abuse, Brought Down Powerful Pastors, and Ignited an Evangelical Reckoning

It’s the story of how a group of women fought for justice in an unjust and unsafe church.

A fabulous review with lots for us to follow up on!

  • Thorn Birds book cover

When a “Romantic” Read is Really About Grooming

Grace Lapoin looks at The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Looked at through the lense of grooming, both seem slightly less than romantic.

    A review on Bookriot, Jul 19, 2021

  • Book cover titled 'Disclosure: Unravelling the SpyCops Files' by Kate Wilson with a background image of a person's face partially obscured by horizontal lines.

We did not Consent - Victims of the Spycops Scandal

Kate Wilson, aged 25, met Mark ‘Stone’ at a workshop to discuss protests against a forthcoming G8 summit. She was an Oxford graduate, anarchist, environmentalist and peace activist, soon to train as a nurse.

Mark, with whom a relationship flourished, was really Mark Kennedy, a police officer with a wife and two kids. He groomed Kate and fed the intimate details of their relationship to his handlers - part of an ongoing scandal known as Spycops.

Her book, Disclosure, is discussed in this Observer book review by Stuart Jeffries.

(It’s made our growing list of ‘must reads’.)
